Interview with Amber Schamel, Homeschool Graduate

 One of the delights that I have encountered while working with Helping Hands Press is the people I’ve met. Amber Schamel is one of them. She garnered my attention first when I learned that her parents homeschooled her. Next, I enjoyed reading her books, The Swaddling Clothes and The Healer’s Touch. I loved the flexibility of the curriculum and schedule. For one thing, I got to choose a lot of my classes based on my interests and ambitions. Besides, I had most of my school work done by 12 or 1 P.M. and had the rest of the day to do other things.

What didn’t you like?

I didn't like that there was almost NEVER an excuse to get out of school. Snow day? Great! We’ll stay home and do school. Sick in bed? Great! You can catch up on history and science reading.

Was there anything unique about your homeschool experience?

We traveled a lot, but all of our travel had certain aspects in it that would qualify it as schooling. For example, if we visited a historical site while on vacation, that counts as a history field trip. If we visited a science museum, a science field trip. I also got a lot of credits for Home Economics since I did a lot of cooking and babysitting.

If you would homeschool your children, what would you do differently?

I really can’t think of anything. I had a wonderful experience, and it has served me well.

What advice as a homeschool graduate would you give a homeschool mother?

Teach your kids how to learn and to love learning. If they have both those qualities, they can learn anything and do almost anything.

Anything else you would like to say about your homeschool experience?

There are soooo many reasons to homeschool, and it’s not as hard as folks think. I would never think of schooling my kids any other way.

Being homeschooled gave me a boost that I wouldn’t have had otherwise, because I learned that you don’t have to go to a classroom to learn things. You can learn them through research, asking people you know, reading books on the subject, etc. I’ve learned many things for free that a lot of people would spend thousands to learn in a classroom.
