The Red Rabbit

Our family has developed a habit. Once a month, we climb in our car, travel Route 322 East, toward the Clark’s Ferry Bridge. Right before crossing the Susquehanna, we turn in at a little restaurant called the Red Rabbit.

My father-in-law used to talk about the beginnings read more
of the restaurant. He was around when they opened. He said he worried about how that little place with the animal name could survive. He stopped worrying about them when he saw the business that they have. Every weekend, a multitude of cars surround the place.

We’ve been buying meals there since the 70s. When the children were little, they crawled into the back of our station wagon to eat Bunny Burgers, chicken fingers, and fries. In fact, a photographer from the Patriot News took our oldest son’s picture while he ate fries. The August 8, 2001 edition had a picture of Tad in the back of our station wagon with food lined up on the window sill.

Unique to this little restaurant is its curbside service. Oh, yes, if you want to get out of your car and walk up to a window you can also get served, but the regulars don’t bother. As soon as you pull in, one of the girls who work there comes to your car and takes your order.

The Bunny Burgers are hamburgers with dill pickle, lettuce, tomato, chopped onion, cheese, bacon, and Red Rabbit’s own special sauce served on your choice of a regular bun or a poppy seed bun. Many people like their pork barbeque. My personal favorite at the Red Rabbit after trying almost everything is their small pepperoni pizza. I love cheese and this pizza has an extra amount topped with more pepperonis than any other pizza I have ever eaten.

So maybe you won’t want to make the Red Rabbit a Habit like their sign board states, but you really should try their food at least once. We love it and think you will, too!

  1. For some reason, this place has always been intriguing to me but I think I've only ever eaten there once.

    1. In the Patriot news article of 2001, the owners said that they planned to keep it the same because "bigger isn't always better."
